After the death of a spouse, can the surviving spouse be held responsible for a auto loan if the surviving spouse is not on the loan?

No.

A debt is a PERSONAL obligation; when you're married to a person, you aren't married to his debts.

There are a few exceptions to this (medical bills, for example).
