Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
Debt collection for former resident of house
An ex-boyfriend's daughter lived with
us for a while (years ago) and got
into debt. She's over 21. Someone
who I suspect is from a debt
collection agency is claiming they are
going to issue subpeonas if we don't
call them back in 24 hours. Do I
have any legal responsibility to help
them find this person? I don't have
a phone number for her, but I do
have an email address and her
sister's phone number. I'd rather not
get involved though. Can I just tell
them to get lost or can they really
take me to court? I can't believe
they can harass me about someone
not related for stuff that happened
years ago.

A subpoena can only be issued in a pending court case. Ask them where the case is filed in a court. Tell them to make sure your address is correct and you will accept the subpoena. You would have to anyway. Send them a letter to quit calling you and quit talking to them on the phone. Be persistent in hanging up.
