Same debt reported by two different companies

I had a bad debit reported twice on my credit report. The orginal company I was in default to (in OH) and the company they sold or hired to collect the debt (in TX)also reported this same debt on my credit report. Can two different companies report the same debt on my credit report? Doesn't seem like it's right? or should be allowed. I live in (PA)

Write to the credit bureaus and explain the error. Ask them to verify the duplicate entries. They should clean it up, but it will take a little while.
