Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

debt

I went to school in Houston 15 years ago on what I thought was a grant. Six months ago I received a letter from a collection agency saying I owed $3000.00 for this education. Not only are they threatening me but my ex-husband as well by threatening to garnish his wages and tax return. He is threatening me as well if I don't get it taken care of. My question is can they do all of this after 15 years? Like I said I thought I had a grant to cover it all. What can I do?

Re: debt

The next time you get a call, tell them you need their demands in writing, get the name address and telephone number of the collection agency; then let me know. If the statute of limitations has run, these threats are in violation of state and federal law.
