Extent of obligation for dead sons hospital bills

Writing on behalf of Mother. Brother died in ICU after one night in ER and three night ICU. Now bills coming to him are expense....Is the family obligated (responsible) for these debts? Can the hospital be reimbursed through the government for the expenses in curred. I am not certain if ''papers'' were signed indicating specifically that the family would assume the debt...Go on the assumtion that this arrangement was NOT made. Thanks for your forthcoming help.

Re: Extent of obligation for dead sons hospital bills

Sorry to hear about your brother. If he was over 18, your mother isn't responsible unless she signed something indicating acceptance of the responsibility. If he was under 18, then your mother would be responsible for the 'necessaries' of her child.
