Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

How do I fight a bill from an attorney

I hired a divorce lawyer for my son who can barely pay his bills. After spending several thousand dollars the divorce was finally settled. My son lost his ass but that's another story. A couple of months go by and we get a bill of $2400 from his lawyer. We were shocked because we hadn't heard anything and thought we were done. I get layed off my job so I have financial hardship too. I sent a check for $1000 with a letter stating that we are flat broke and by cashing the check they agree this makes us paid in full. They cashed it. We again didn't hear anything for a couple months until we get a letter from a collection agency wanting $1400 balance. Is there anything we can do to fight the remaining balance and prevent this from going on my son's credit report? I told my son to send the lawyer $20 per month until we find out what we can do.

You should be entitled to an explanation as to why $2400 was billed well after the divorce went through. The charge may be legitimate, in which case it's an owed debt. Then, again, the attorney may have made a billing mistake.
