Finance charge on medical bills?

I have been making monthly payments of $25 for a hospital bill direct to the hospital for over three years now. I recently lowered my last two payments to $5 as I have a new infant daughter and I am no longer employed. I just received a statement in the mail from a collection agency saying my hospital will collect payments through them. It said I had to make a minimum payment of $159 monthly or they would charge a 4% finance fee. Can they legally do this?

Probably, unless you have an alternate written agreement with the hospital.
