Can hotel force me to stay when credit card declines?

Credit card cleared 1st night stay at hotel. 9 days later I was informed that card declined for entire stay. I asked for itemized bill. Instead I was greeted by the cops before ever being given a chance to resolve the issue. Hotel is making me sit here until I pay $900. Can they do this?
