Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

identity theft and credit

Someone in my family opened a credit card in my name 12 years ago. Collection Agency is trying to collect a $600 debt. I just found out about this and now they want money. I don't owe it. I did not open this card. They told me that I have to file a police report and press charges in order not to pay this debt. I can't press charges because this company can't provide any info regardign items purchased or signatures or addresses. Nothing! What can I do to tell them to clear this debt and take it off my credit? Its from 1996. I was in high school when this card was opened.

Re: identity theft and credit

classic unfair collection case...however, most lawyers would not take on a contingency..you can dispute with credit reporting agencies but need to go to Court to collect damages..
