Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Can interest be added if you are making regular payments

My wife and I went through a legal battle to get the biological father terminated on the grounds of sexual abuse and ended up with quite a bill and no longer receive child support. The money that was coming in from the child support was being used to pay the attorney, so when it went away, we were not able to keep making such large monthly payments. We do pay regularly, but have recently received notice that the law firm wants to sue us for the amount owed. Can they do this since we make regular payments? Can they charge interest even though it was not in the original agreement for service? Help!
