Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Liability relating to charges made by ex-husband

I received a bill from a dentist in Texas in the amount of $1177.00 that is 91 (+) days past due that my ex-husband refuses to pay. The bill is for dental work for our son done in November 2005. Ex-husband had address changed to mine in Wyoming and the bill now is coming to me. He just says, ''I can't pay it.'' He has been carrying our son on his health/dental insurance at work since our divorce in 1993. We had joint custody of the children w/ their primary residence in Texas until they became of age. Is it my responsibility to pay this bill? If I refuse to pay the bill and the dentist files for collection will my credit be affected? Thank you for any information you can provide regarding this dilemma.

I do not know the law in Wyoming.

In Texas (and most states) you are liable for the necessaries of your children. That would include medical and dental. The dentist can come after you for the debt, and if unpaid it could affect your credit.

If you pay the bill, depending upon the terms of your decree, you may be able to after your ex for the amount you paid.
