money owed

my uncle signed for a vehicle 6 yrs ago he took position of vehicle 2yrs ago.his daughter since totalled the vehicle,in whichc insurance claims were filed.now he is sending us harrassing letters of intent to sue to collect on debt.he showed up at our residence and insisted I sign a handwriiten promisory note.I need to know my grounds so the harrassment can be stopped.

Explain to your uncle that his name is on the car note, he took the vehicle two years ago, and he gave it to his daughter who carelessly wecked it. The insurance money is his, and so is the balance of the note. You do not have to pay him anything, assuming that you paid for the first four years that you had the vehicle.
