Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Third Party Cash Checking - Stopped Payment

I paid someone with a check to mow my lawn. They did not show up an the scheduled date and I was unable to a hold of them, so I stopped payment on the check. At some poin they cashed the check at one of those cash checking businesses. This check cashing company has been 'harrassing' me by phone and mail for repayment of this check plus fees. Of course, I feel that I'm under no obligation to pay them, but can someone affirm this. I'm also concerned that this could eventually come back and haunt me on my credit report. Should I seek recourse or just ignore them and hope nothing ever comes of it?

Re: Third Party Cash Checking - Stopped Payment

Ignoring them is the worst thing you can do. Write to them, certified mail, return receipt requested, setting out why the check was stopped. They will have to look to the endorser of the check for recourse.
