Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Cannot pay for collection acount what are my options?

My ex-husband filed bankruptcy, included in the divorce decree was the car he was leasing, which he was responsible for. Without my knowledge I am collected by a collection agency demanding $ 8634.00 for damages done to the vehicle and he did not have insurance. He has turned in the vehicle and since the bankruptcy is not responsible. I was a co-signer, but thought the divorce decree protected me. I can settle with them for $ 6300. I am a graduate student now and not employed. I live off my student loans monthly. Should I settle if I can find the money or wait for the seven years so the collection just rolls off. I really do not have the money to pay for it, not even monthly payments. I had excellent credity until this collection was put on my report. I was not contacted by anyone or given an opportunity to pay before the collection was put on my credit report since I moved from Texas to Alabama. I desperately need advice. I want to get it resolve, but it sickens me how someone making $100,000 year can file bankruptcy be protected from collectors and I am not working now and my life is being harassed by his irresponsibility with money.

Thank you,

Janet

Bankruptcy is one option. I hate to tell you this, but the divorce decree was strictly between you and your ex, and not binding on joint creditors.
