Can a pay day loan company threaten fraud charges on a defaulted loan

What they said to you probably violated the law.
Remember that these people are not human. They have no hearts, souls, or mothers.
If they call you, tell them you'll pay them when you can, and then hang up.
Or tell them: "I'll pay you when I can. This call is being recorded. State your full name and the street address where you are currently located." If the guy won't tell you, hang up on him. If he DOES tell you, hang up on him.
