They can dispose of it by either private or public sale. They are supposed to notify the debtor of the date of the proposed sale and you have until that date to redeem the vehicle. There are also certain other things that are supposed to be in that post-repossession notice - if such a notice is not sent you have remedies against the creditor. The price the car sells for is applied to the balance and the remaining balance is what you will owe.
