Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Responsibility of debt after divorce

I have been contacted by a collection agency stating that they are going to bring a law suit against me for a vehicle that was awarded to my exhusband in the divorce. He allowed the vehicle to be repossesed and now is not responding to any calls or mailings they have sent him. The agency stated that the divorce decree doesn't protect me from the suit and a lein could be placed on my property for his debt. What are my options for taking care of this situation? I thought the divorce resolved me of the debt on that vehicle, even if my name is on the loan. Please help.

Both remain liable on the debt, since the creditor wasn't party to the divorce. They'll go after the party that they figure has the best chance of paying.

You can sue your ex-husband for his breach of the divorce agreement, for whatever that may be worth.
