Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas
My sister moved to Texas and got an apartment hoping to find employment and start over fresh. She has been unable to find work and the apartment had many issues that made living there uncomfortable and even dangerous. She submitted a letter to the apartment informing them that she was breaking the lease for these reasons a month in advance. Now they have turned the debt collectors on her. She has no income and no money to pay. What should she do ?
1 Answer from Attorneys
First, when contacted by the collectors, ask specifically for the address to whicha she can send her letter asking that she not be harrassed with multiple phone calls. If they refuse to give up the address, tell her to advise them then that the phone call is being recorded and that she is going to turn the recording over to an attorney. Second, get all her money out of her bank accounts (checking, savings, etc.).
