Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Is there a statue of limitations for credit collectors to collect a debt? I received a letter from a collection agency and called to find out what it was and was told it was an old dept store credit card balance from 1987. We filed bankrpucy in 1988 and I know this was one of the debts we listed to be dissolved in the bankrupcy. So does the agency have a leg to stand on? They first contacted me about a year ago, I explained the above to them, they went away for a while and now I got another letter. Can they truly damage our now good credit? OR is this just an attempt to try to bully unsuspected people into paying old debts? What rights do I have as a consumer?
