Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

I had a few credit cards when I lived in New Mexico and due to financial hardship I stopped paying on them.That was 8 years ago,since then I have moved to the state of Texas and receive letters and phone calls from collection agencies that have purchased these accounts.I have lived in TX for almost 8 years now. One agency in particular is very aggressive in a couple of phone calls that I have mistakenly answered. Can they legally come after me? What should I do?
