Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Being sued for Credit card debts

I rencently was served papers for a credit card debt. I don't know what to do since I don't have the total amount (aprox 7000.00 total of two cards plus the court and attorney fees they are seeking). I'm to send in my response to the papers in 20 days. Do I need an attorney? I haven't used cards in over 5 years and most of the balance I believe to be late fee's and penilities. I used a credit counseling service for 14 months, paying them 600.00 a month to take care of my debts and this wasn't done as it was explained to me. Wrong as it was, I just stopped paying on any of it. Please advise as I'm scared and don't know what to do next.
