Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Being sued for money not borrowed from Suer

A friend of mine who was incarserated and in a substance abuse facilty when I went with his mother to visit, while there i told him of the possibility of losing my apartment due to my son's medical bill. He then offered to pay my months rent. I said no then he was persistant wanting to help, because he had sold his place at the lake, so i finally said ok,but didnt know when I could pay him back. He told his mother to go get the money from bank and bring it to me. She did a couple of days later, and he got out of there a month or so later, in which I started paying what I could and he was ok with that, now his mother is sueing me for the remainder of the balance which is just over half, stating on the supena that she loaned me the money, and stated that I was to have paid it back by november of last year. I have been in touch with her son all throughout this and it was he that I paid the money back to, but he has stopped calling all of a sudden. There was never an IOU of any sort nor did I sign anything. I do not feel that I owe her anything and have every intention to pay the rest of it back to him when I can which was our agreement anyways. Can she legally sue me without proof of anything?
