Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Transferred Satellite Bill

I had a satellite with a particular company in 2006, and I paid them off, and discontinued my service with them. Several months later, I started getting a bill from a collection agency they hired saying that someone else at the same address with the same last name had a bill with them previously that they did not pay, so they transferred that amount over to my account, and they are expecting me to pay the amount, and have taken his name completely off the bill. I did not sign the contract when he got the service, because I didn't even know he was getting it, but they are trying to charge his amount on my account. He got the account in 2001, and I got my account in 2006, and I paid what I owed under my contract, but they are saying that he didn't pay what he owed under his, so they have transferred it to my account. My question is: Is it legal for them to transfer his bill to me because we have the same last name and address, and my name is nowhere on his contract, and I had no knowledge that he was getting the service? Thanks.

Re: Transferred Satellite Bill

It's improper! Are the first names different? What other identification does the satellite use? If SSN, compare the last four digits (not the whole number).

If the matter can't be satisfactorily resolved, you may need a lawyer to sue them.
