Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

unpaid school debt

My father sent me to college in 1988. I found out mid-semester he wasn't paying the bill, as promised, and dropped out. I am still receiving threatening letters from a collection agency, even though my mother says one of my parents signed registration papers. How can I stop the harrassment for this debt that shouldn't have been mine in the first place?

Re: unpaid school debt

First you should write to the agency setting forth why you're not responsible for the debt, and that they should not contact you except by writing. I'm assuming that it's not about a federally backed student loan.

Then contact a local attorney that's familiar with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
