Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

My wife and I have an unsecured debt total close to $100K accross several credit cards and a couple of lines of credit. For the past 11 months we have been working with a debt settlement firm to work with our creditors in settling this debt. This was a resort we took after exploring the options of bankruptcy. Other than monthly payments to this settlement firm we have seen no real progress in eliminating this debt other than a few small accounts amounting to about $5K. We have recently been sued by the law firm representing American Express for an amount "not less than" $30K. We have already filed our summons response to the Tarrant Cty clerks office and recently received "Plaintiffs Certificate of Unfiled Discovery Requests". Through our settlement firm we received advice to respond as formally as possible without incriminating ourselves. We would obviously feel better consulting an attorney but fear we could not afford those services. Would filing our response on our own be a wise decision or is this response a critical element to the suit? If a judegment is issued what options do we have in continuing to work out a settlement on the debt? We want to repay our debts but can't do so on anyone else's terms therefore we continue to sock away and negotiate our way out. What other options do we have other than debt settlement?

Call us or email with all documents from Debt company..but you may have a claim against it..and ALWAYS answer lawsuits in writing...Deny as claimed since you don't know but creditors usually add on interest or penalties which are not warranted..and swear to your denial
