my 20 year old son brought a car and his ex girlfriend dad co signed my son is current on his car payment but the father has hired independent repo companies to pick the car up is this legal

If the ex girlfriend's dad is not on the title to the car, and there is no agreement between your son and the ex girlfriend's dad, this sounds like theft or conversion. Your son should hire a lawyer.
Based on what you have written and assuming that your son's ex-girlfriend's dad is not on the title of the car, but your son's ex-girlfriend's dad is only a co-signer on the loan; then if the repo company comes and picks up the vehicle -- your son's ex-girlfriend's dad and potentially the repo company may be criminally liable for their actions. You son should consider hiring a law firm to assist him in protecting his rights and interests.
