Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

I was in an altercation Saturday night at a bar. Police were there and stopped it after two swings. I was then mased and my head was banged against a car (by the police). I was not be uncooperative. In the end I spent a night in jail and was charged with assault with injury. I was told that in many cases such as this these charges are dropped. I wanted to know if I should invest in a private lawyer or just go with the court-appointed. I also would like to know if I should proceed with legal actions against the police.

You have no grounds to go against the cops. They have many protections against lawsuits and they will probably say that you were combative (and unless there is video otherwise, the police are most often believed.)

As far as a lawyer, if you are indigent, then that means you cannot afford a lawyer therefore one will be appointed to you. If you are not indigent, then you do not qualify for a court appointed lawyer and must hire one yourself.
