Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

Area of Practice and licensure

Can a Civil Attorney that is licensed as a Civil Attorney try a criminal case? I had an attorney try a criminal case in 1990 and he turned out to be a Civil Lawer not a Criminal. I would like to know if that was legal by the State Bar of Texas. I have researched the case but, cannot find out if the civil atty. can try a criminal case.
