Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas
I was caught shoplifting at kohl's yesterday. The LP took me to a small room and I returned the merchandise. She took my name and address. She did not rake any ID or SSN. No police involved. She said I would receive a civil demand letter. My question is that should I pay the amount or ignore the letter as I read mixed views online. I am confused.
Also will it show on my record if I may or may not pay the amount demanded. This was my first and offence .
Need help please.

I'd wait for the letter to arrive before speculating on what to do. If they do not prosecute you and there is no police report or arrest there is nothing to place on a criminal record.
I usually advise my criminal defendants not to pay the civil demand. I certainly would not advise you to pay anything unless they signed a release and a waiver of prosecution.
