Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas
I have been charged with a forgery-financial instrument should I get an attorney to post bail or is a bails bond company sufficient, I am a student with minimal funds. please help me.
1 Answer from Attorneys
You do not need an attorney to post bail for you. If you have minimal funds, and have a decent record, you should try for a personal recognizance (PR) bond. That is the cheapest option.
Some attorneys will post bail and represent you as well. If you are unable to obtain a PR bond, this may be a good alternative. Often, hiring a lawyer to do both bond and legal representation is cheaper than hiring a bondsman and an attorney.
This is a serious charge punishable as a felony. Felony convictions are life altering events. If you have a felony on your record, you will find that people will discriminate against you. You will find yourself denied employment, housing and credit, just because of that conviction.
If you were near retirement with a home and a family, a felony conviction won't matter. However if you are much closer to the beginning of your life, felony convictions place you at a severe disadvantage for building the rest of your life.
For this reason, you need to retain counsel who will keep your future in mind.
