Can my son request that his court appointed attorney enter a plea for a lesser charge since this is his first offense?

Your son can ask his attorney to try to get a lesser charge. However, it is up to the prosecutor whether they want to offer a lesser charge.

Your son can request a lot of things, but that doesn't necessarily mean the district attorneys will reduce the charge to a lesser included offense.
Everything is going to depend on the facts of the case.
