Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

Court-appointed Lawyers

I have a brother who was recently arrested and charged with a third-degree felony. He was not seen on his first trial date because his lawyer never showed. I am curious as to whether or not this is a common occurence for court-appointed lawyers. Also: is there anything that can be done about it, for my brother has said that he hasn't even spoken with his lawyer.

Thank you.

Re: Court-appointed Lawyers

Your lawyer should be at every hearing. It is possible that his lawyer did not receive notice of his/her appointment so they did not show up for court. I would suggest that you call the lawyer to find out what is going on. However, if your brother is still not satisfied with his appointed counsel, then he can hire his own attorney to substitute in. He can probably afford a lawyer since many lawyers offer payments plans and accept credit cards. Also many lawyers will do cases for a flat fee so you will know how much it will cost.

Sincerely,
