Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

Criminal Background

I was convicted of theft 4 years ago. It was in the amount of $10,000. My lawyer told me to plead guilty and avoid a trial. He said that I was going to be on deferred adjudification and when I filled out an employement application I could check no on the conviction question. He lied. I got probation for 5 years. It says on my record, guilty. Anyways, I will be graduating in the spring and would like to know what I can do about this and what are my chances of being to persue a career in social work? Thank you.

Re: Criminal Background

A probation term of 5 years and a plea of guilty are both entirely consistent with a deferred adjudication.

If you successfully complete your probation you will be entitled to an Order dismissing the charges.

At that point you can truthfully say you have never been convicted of a felony.

Your self-analysis of your situation is flawed. Get professional help - you are not as good a lawyer as you think.
