is a defense attorney allowed to get the same information as the prosecution

As far as what? The defense lawyer is not allowed to be in a grand jury proceeding and the prosecutor does not have to share notes from interviewing witnesses, etc. The defense lawyer is entitled to view all evidence that the state will offer against an accused. S/He is not entitled to see the offense report although generally it is allowed; same with witnesses statements (except after the witness testifies.)
