What does a ''deferred'' disposition mean on a criminal background report?

This is finding by the court that a person is placed on community supervision (probation) for a certain period of time. There is no finding of guilt, but there is a finding that sufficient evidence exists to find him/her guilty. If the person successfully completes the probation, then the court goes back and dismisses the case, so there is no conviction. It is frequently used in cases of minor offenses/first time offenses where the court determines that a person deserves a second chance. TCL
