Diferred Judification

In 1998 I was a passenger in a vehicle, that was stop by police. They found marijuana in the vehicle. I never went to court. Now some eleven years later It pops up an to make a long story short I have a court date coming up. The public defender say they are willing to give me a diferred @ judification. what does this really mean? Will this affect me apply for other jobs. Will it be on my record. My cousin who the car belonged to got the case drop on him some years ago, without my knowledge. What am I to do? I live in Mississippi, but the case is in Texas

Re: Diferred Judification

In Mississippi the usual deferred adjudication case is a case where you enter a plea of Guilty, pay a fine and costs, and go on probation for 2-3 years. If you successfully complete the probation your case is dismissed as if you were never arrested for the crime and you would not have a felony record. I feel sure the Texas program is very similar if not identical, but you need to consult independent counsel in Texas to make sure the provisions and outcome would be the same. In Mississippi, if you violate probation (i.e, get arrested for another crime) you would automatically be convicted for the possession charge and probably would be sent to prison or jail.
