I received a violent threat via email form my soon to be former son in law stating specifically he is ''coming to beat my ass''. Can I file charges.

Re: Email threat
You can take it to the police department, and see if they will file a charge.
As a lawyer, I would ask you to try to objectively determine if that will make a volatile situation worse or better. If the threat is an idle one, stirring the pot could just make it worse. If the threat is real, then convey that opinion to the police.
