Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

Employee Theft Investigation

I was informed by former co-workers that my former employer is investigating a theft. It started off as a missing item (approx. $2000) and now they are trying to trace it through employees computer passwords for multiple transactions moving monies around. It sounds like they are seeing some suspicious items sold and then returned for cash then somehow applied to an item that was then released. Sounds rather involved to steal something. Why would someone create a paper trail? Two of the four other employees involved still work for the company. They were interviewed and required to sign some papers. The company is calling me asking me to come to the corporate office to do the same. I have requested they mail any information they want me to review and I will respond accordingly. The response I receieved was that it was in my best personal interest to come talk to them while it is still in house. It appears that one of the still current employees password was the password used in releasing the product. Do I talk to the ''in-house'' counsel without a lawyer? I am not sure if I should wait it out or persue this directly. I did not knowingly participate in a conspiracy. They asked the other employees if I knew their passwords. Advice?

Re: Employee Theft Investigation

From what you have stated, it appears that your employer is out hunting for the wrongdoer. You need to keep in mind that Texas is an "at-will" employment state. That basically means that your employer may let you go at any time from your employment. As such, if you go "talk" to in-house counsel without a lawyer, it might be to your detriment or benefit. The threat of it was in your best personal interest to come talk to them while it is still in house appears to be your employer's way of attempting to gather evidence that may be used against you later in any such prosecution comes to light.
