Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

A friend of mine had a friend rent him a U-haul. He left it over at my house & told me i could use it if i needed it. Well i tried taking it to him 2 different times but he wasnt home. I told him to come get it several times but he never did. Well one night i used it to move some restaurant equipment & on the way the ABS light came on. So I pulled off the freeway & I had the hood up & the police came up to me. They asked me wht i was doing & i told them. Well me not ever having a drivers license & warrants for my arrest from tickets I couldnt afford to go to jail at tht time cuz of thgs i had going on tht I had to deal wth, I took off running on foot & left the U-haul. Well 3 weeks later I get arrested for theft of the U-haul. The person tht rented it didnt report it stolen until a week or more after the police had it in their possession. How can they file theft on me?

Because you were in possession of stolen property. Given the amount of time that it was in your possession (on your property), you should have been questioning whether the thing was still rented. Why would someone rent a U-Haul and then keep it for weeks? Makes no sense, does it?
