My friend just got out of prison. He was there for 6 years. If he gets arrested for trying to cash a hot check, what will happen to him?

He will be arrested? Whose hot check is it? His? Someone else's? Does he know it is hot. (By hot, I assume you mean it will bounce.)
If he writes a hot check, he could be charged with theft by check. The level of offense would depend on the amount of the check.
Regardless of whatever crime he may be involved in, the system will treat him more harshly in that his offers to settle the case will be higher.
