Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

My grandson Derek was 21 and in jail in Texas for drug charges. He was out on work release and left the state. He went to Illinois and was at a party, drinking and a girl offered to drive him home. They started making out and she accused him of rape. Which he denied. The public defender told Derek because he had been in trouble in Texas no one would believe him. The girl came back and said a year before this she had been raped and she started having flash backs with Derek. The public defender said it was too late becasue the state had picked up the case. They plee bargined and he served his time in Illinois. Now he is back in Texas jail. They gave hime another 7 years for leaving the state. I just want to know if it is possible to have the sex offencene taken off his record so he doesn't have to rejuster as a sex affender.
