Can a judge arbitrarily reset a trial date 6 months later even though both sides were ready for trial on original date ? Does it not violate my right to a speedy trial?

The judge has the right to run his / her docket as they see fit - within reason. There can be multiple cases set on the same day; there can be no jurors available; there can be other problems of which you are not aware.
You must file a written demand (through your attorney) for a speedy trial for it to be violated.
