Is there any law stateing that you have to take a persrition drug in a certain amount of time

When a drug is prescribed to you, you are told to use it in a certain way which implies that the drug will be gone after say 5 weeks. If you possess the drug say 6 months later without a renewed prescription, then the authorities know that you do not have it for the reason for which it was prescribed. Generally they won't do anything to someone for this but they could.
