if I have already paid my retainer fee, can my lawyer ask for more money, even if we have not gone to trial or even stood before the judge?

Re: my lawyer

What does your contract say? My contract has a flat fee for pre-trial and a flat fee for trial. Other than that, client is only responsible for expenses.

If your contract states a flat fee and the attorney wants more money that is not stated in the contract, i would make sure to let your attorney know that they would be in breach of contract.

You might also consider filing a grievance with the state bar and pursuing fee dispute guidance from the local bar association.

It depends on the language of your contract with your lawyer.

Re: my lawyer

Based on what you have written, you need to review the specific terms of your agreement with the attorney. Generally, the agreement terms may create a flat fee or hourly rate agreement.
