Bail forfeiture proceedings usually begin with the entry of a judgment nisi. A judgment nisi is an interlocutory, conditional judgment that declares that a bond is forfeited unless the defendant shows good cause why he failed to appear in the court where his case was pending and when his presence was required. The judgment is prima facie proof that Article 22.02 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure has been satisfied (which provides for how to take the forfeiture of an appearance bond).
