The statute of limitations sets a maximum time limit for a prosecutor to file charges.

The length of time that a grand jury has to indict someone is dependent upon the statute of limitations of the particular offense.

The statute of limitations are as follows: misdemeanors: 2 years, Murder, manslaughter, and certain sexual assaults: none; thefts involving fiduciaries or officials forgery, sexual assault, indecency with a child: 10 yrs.; misapplication of fiduciary property: 7 yrs.; other theft, burglary, robbery, and certain sexual assaults: 5 yrs.; arson: 7 yrs.; others: 3 yrs.
