Obtaining DNA from a potential suspect

What do the police need in order to ask a potential suspect for DNA? Do they need an order from a judge or something? This is for a murder case where there is a potential suspect.

Re: Obtaining DNA from a potential suspect

Yes, they either need the person's consent or a court order. More importantly, anyone who is a murder suspect, or the subject of a request for DNA should be in a lawyer's office, not on the internet. There should be no discussion of the topic, except in that lawyer's office.
