If a person has committed theft and the victim does not wish to press charges, How long does the state have to pick up those charges?

The statute of limitations for filing misdemeanor charges is 2 years. Most thefts under $1500 are misdemeanors. The statute of limitations for bringing felony charges is 5 years.
