Prosecuting sexual assualt for consenual sex with someon 16

Why would the DA pursue charges against a young man 22 years old, with no previous record of any kind of charges against him, who had sex with a girl one week away from her 17th birthday, when she has stated it was consenual, and he readily admits to it, having never thought of the fact he was commiting a felony? I know that the law says this is a felony offense, but the DA was able to get an indictment and is aggressively pushing for full punishment under the law. Why would they want to send this young man to prison for something that occurs between young people every day, and what possible defense di we have?

The prosecution will enforce the law because that is his/her job. You need a good defense attorney to review the statements of the witness(es) and look for any errors in the prosecution's case. If there are none, you can hope that the jury will engage in what is called "jury nullification," which means that the jurors decide to be merciful.
