Can a prosecutor ask a defendant to provide proof of a statement made? What happens if they did?

When? Where? Why is the prosecutor talking with a defendant? Why isn't the prosecutor talking with the defendant's lawyer? If the defendant is representing himself - dumb move - then the prosecutor can ask whatever of the defendant because the defendant has made himself the representative.
